Allergies are the body's immune system reacting to harmless substances, known as allergens, as if they were harmful invaders. These reactions can manifest in various ways, including respiratory allergies and food allergies, each with their own set of symptoms and potential complications.
Respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and asthma, occur when the immune system overreacts to airborne allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold spores. Symptoms may include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itching or watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, respiratory allergies can lead to asthma attacks, characterized by difficulty breathing and chest tightness.
Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts to proteins in certain foods, triggering symptoms such as hives, itching, swelling, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or even life-threatening anaphylaxis. Common food allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, eggs, milk, soy, and wheat.
