Similarities between asthma and COPD include symptoms like coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. These symptoms can vary in severity and may be triggered by factors such as respiratory infections, allergens, pollutants, and exercise. Both conditions involve inflammation and narrowing of the airways, which contribute to breathing difficulties.

However, there are notable differences between asthma and COPD. Asthma is typically characterized by reversible airflow obstruction, meaning that symptoms can improve with appropriate treatment, whereas COPD involves irreversible airflow limitation. Asthma often begins in childhood or adolescence and is frequently associated with allergies and a family history of asthma, while COPD is more common in older adults and is predominantly caused by long-term exposure to cigarette smoke or other environmental pollutants.
