Coughing is a common reflex that helps clear the airways of mucus, irritants, or foreign particles. While it is often a temporary and benign symptom, persistent or severe coughing can indicate an underlying health issue. Several factors can cause coughing, ranging from respiratory infections to environmental irritants and chronic medical conditions.
Respiratory infections, such as the common cold, flu, or pneumonia, are among the most common causes of acute cough. These infections irritate the airways, leading to inflammation and increased mucus production, triggering the cough reflex. In some cases, viral respiratory infections can progress to bacterial infections, requiring antibiotics for treatment.
Chronic conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can cause persistent coughing. Asthma involves inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing, particularly at night or during physical activity. COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, causes progressive airflow limitation and persistent cough with sputum production. Treatment for asthma and COPD often involves bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and lifestyle modifications to manage symptoms and improve lung function.
