Both influenza and COVID-19 can present with symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, body aches, sore throat, headache, and respiratory symptoms like shortness of breath. Additionally, both illnesses can range from mild to severe, with the potential for complications such as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and organ failure, particularly in vulnerable populations.
Certain populations are at higher risk of severe illness from both influenza and COVID-19. Older adults, individuals with underlying medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, and weakened immune systems, as well as pregnant women, are more susceptible to complications from both viruses. However, COVID-19 has shown to disproportionately affect certain demographic groups, including older adults and individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups.
