Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition characterized by the frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing. While occasional acid reflux is common and usually harmless, GERD occurs when reflux becomes persistent and causes troublesome symptoms or complications.
If left untreated, GERD can progress and lead to more severe complications. Chronic exposure to stomach acid can irritate and damage the lining of the esophagus, leading to inflammation (esophagitis), ulcers, and narrowing of the esophagus (strictures). Long-term untreated GERD may also increase the risk of developing Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous condition that can progress to esophageal cancer in some cases.
Certain factors increase the risk of developing GERD, including obesity, hiatal hernia, pregnancy, smoking, and certain medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and calcium channel blockers. Individuals with a family history of GERD or a history of frequent heartburn are also at higher risk.
