Morbid obesity is a severe form of obesity characterized by a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or 35 or higher with obesity-related health conditions. It poses significant health risks and is closely linked to metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including insulin resistance, high blood pressure, abnormal lipid levels, and abdominal obesity. This constellation of risk factors increases the likelihood of developing serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and heart disease.
Morbid obesity is also associated with a shortened lifespan, with studies indicating a higher risk of premature death compared to individuals of normal weight. This increased mortality risk is primarily attributed to the heightened incidence of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure, as well as other obesity-related conditions.
Fortunately, morbid obesity can be reversed through lifestyle modifications and, in some cases, medication such as GLP-1 receptor agonists.
