Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection that affects the nails, most commonly the toenails. It occurs when fungi, typically dermatophytes, yeast, or molds, invade the nail bed through small cuts or breaks in the nail or surrounding skin. While nail fungus can affect anyone, certain factors increase the risk of developing the infection.
Individuals who frequently expose their feet to warm, moist environments, such as sweaty shoes or communal showers, are more susceptible to nail fungus. People with weakened immune systems, circulation problems, diabetes, or a history of athlete's foot are also at higher risk. Additionally, aging increases the risk of nail fungus, as nails tend to become thicker and more brittle with age, providing a favorable environment for fungal growth.
Nail fungus is typically transmitted through direct contact with contaminated surfaces or by sharing personal items like nail clippers or shoes with an infected individual. Walking barefoot in public places like pools, gyms, or locker rooms can also increase the risk of exposure to fungi.
Symptoms of nail fungus may include thickened, discolored, brittle, or crumbly nails, as well as nail deformities or a foul odor. The infection may spread to adjacent nails or the surrounding skin if left untreated.
