Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common eye condition characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inner surface of the eyelids. It can be caused by viral, bacterial, or allergic factors.
Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious and often occurs alongside respiratory infections, such as the common cold. Symptoms include redness, watery discharge, itching, and discomfort, with both eyes typically affected. Bacterial conjunctivitis is also contagious and may result in more severe symptoms, including thicker discharge and crusting of the eyelids. Allergic conjunctivitis occurs in response to allergens like pollen, pet dander, or dust mites, leading to itching, redness, and swelling of the eyes.
Individuals of all ages can develop pink eye, but certain factors may increase susceptibility. Close contact with infected individuals, poor hand hygiene, and crowded environments increase the risk of viral or bacterial conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis is more common in individuals with a history of allergies or asthma.
