People of all ages can experience a sore throat, but certain factors can increase susceptibility. Young children and adolescents are more prone to viral infections such as the common cold and influenza, which frequently manifest with a sore throat. Individuals with weakened immune systems due to conditions like HIV/AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy are also at higher risk. Smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke may experience chronic sore throat due to irritation of the throat tissues.
Untreated conditions that cause sore throat can lead to complications, particularly if the underlying infection spreads or persists. For instance, bacterial infections like strep throat, if left untreated, can result in rheumatic fever, a serious inflammatory condition that affects the heart, joints, and other organs. Chronic acid reflux, where stomach acid regularly flows back into the esophagus, can lead to complications such as Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous condition, and esophageal cancer if not managed properly.
