Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are infections that spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex. There are various types of STDs, each with unique symptoms, methods of diagnosis, treatments, and preventive measures.
Some STDs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages, making them easy to overlook and allowing the infection to spread unknowingly. However, when symptoms do occur, they can include genital itching, burning during urination, unusual discharge, and genital sores or lesions. Other STDs, like herpes and syphilis, may cause visible genital sores or ulcers. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can cause genital warts or lead to cervical, anal, or throat cancer.
Diagnosing STDs typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Testing may include urine samples, blood tests, swabs of genital lesions or discharge, and Pap smears for HPV and cervical cancer screening. It's important to seek prompt medical evaluation if you suspect you have been exposed to an STD or experience symptoms, as early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and reduce the risk of spreading the infection to others.
