Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections that affect the urinary system, including the bladder, urethra, ureters, and kidneys. While they can occur in anyone, they are more prevalent in women due to their shorter urethras, which make it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder.
If left untreated, UTIs can lead to complications and more severe infections. If bacteria travel up the urinary tract to the kidneys, a condition known as pyelonephritis can develop. Symptoms of kidney infection may include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and back pain. Chronic or recurrent UTIs can also increase the risk of kidney damage and urinary tract abnormalities.
Certain factors increase the risk of developing UTIs, including female anatomy and sexual activity.
